Byley Field Target Club – Wildlife Conservation Page

Byley FTC is fortunate to have the use of a small but wonderfully diverse area of woodland, ponds and improved meadow, and the Club is entrusted with maintaining this small wildlife sanctuary in as natural a condition as possible.

Using the land for target shooting ensures it is not neglected nor overgrown, and though we leave some areas fully wild and undisturbed, our careful habitat management ensures that the plants and trees get excellent light conditions to encourage a wide range of plant, insect, bird and animal species. The ponds are also clean and alive with water invertebrates, amphibians and fish.

As with many country sports, Field Target Shooting can make a significant contribution to the preservation of wildlife, and Byley FTC is fully committed to doing so.

In memory of Mr Lowe the father of Mr Grayham Lowe who farms the land on which the Club is based, Byley FTC erected some 8 bird nest boxes in 2009. In 2011, 5 of these were occupied by Great Tits, Blue Tits, Tree Creepers, Chiffchaff, and Blackcaps, and the majority of these successfully fledged young birds.
